Second Chance

Dr. Theodor Reik, famed psychoanalyst and prize student of Sigmund Freud, wrote an intriguing autobiography entitled “Listening with the Third Ear”.  In this impactful book, he transparently revealed many of his own personal struggles.  I found one passage to be especially riveting.  Listen, with your own “third ear”, to what he  wrote: 

In the interval before falling asleep, which was difficult on account of the remorse I felt because I had hurt my wife's feelings, I had a few sad thoughts that ran in the following direction: "If one could live one's life again, if one only had a second chance!" If one had such a chance, how differently one would spend one's second life! But the chance alone would not be sufficient, I thought; one had also to change one's character. How would a second chance help if I were still the same? No, a second chance alone would be insufficient; one should also start life as another person.
And how would a second chance help a man who is old? It would be necessary to give him not only his youth but also a young mind, a soul fresh and receptive to new impressions. Yes, he would have to be young in body and mind. If one lived one's life again with the same character, life would be the same.

I slowly and reflectively read these words written by a famous psychoanalyst, and then I thought of another old man named Nicodemus. He came, under cover of darkness, to see Jesus. Nicodemus was himself a theologian and would have been embarrassed to be seen at the living quarters of this fly-by-night rabbi. Nicodemus therefore tried to fly under the radar. He asked this soul-searching question, “Rabbi, how can a man be born again when he is old? Can he re-enter his mother’s womb a second time?” Jesus simply said,

"That which is born of the flesh is flesh; that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

John Chapter 3

As I  thought about this Biblical encounter,  I sincerely regretted that I had never had the opportunity to introduce a well-known psychiatrist to Jesus of Nazareth, the Promised Savior for  Gentiles and Jews, the One who offers each of us a second chance.
