Moving On

There are a multitude of various reversals that can occur in our lives, tragedies and misfortunes that are usually unanticipated, unexpected, and uncontrollable. Many times we react by wanting to quit, just give up, roll over and pull the covers over our head. We feel done-in, finished, exhausted, defeated. We’ve all been there.

Remember the story of the prophet Elijah who was in flight from the vengeance of Queen Jezebel. She had vowed to take his life, and Elijah was not sticking around to see how it would all turn out.

When he came to Beersheba---- he---went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. 'I have had enough, Lord,' he said.

In a book, Everlasting Life, David O. Swanson commented: “His circumstances are such that he tells the Lord, ‘Take my life’ (v. 4).  He’s done, but God won’t let him stop  moving.  God sends an angel with food to nourish him, and on the strength of that food (I believe both spiritual and physical food), Elijah travels another 40 days and nights.  He keeps  going, and he fulfills God’s plan for his life.”  (P. 94)

So there come into our life events (like bereavement) that cripple us. Yet we arise and soldier on, keep going, keep trusting. The Lord is our coach, our manager. He calls the shots. Our souls are safe in His hands.

Amen

Shine Like the Stars

Available for Pre-Order.  Each of us has been given a gift: our life. Someday we must return it to its rightful owner. We are free to use this gift in any way we choose: to glorify God or to glorify ourself. St. Paul used his to glorify God and, in so doing, found the secret of joy. decided to write a devotional commentary on his letter to the fledgling Christian community in Philippi. They too were discovering the secret of genuine joy. I am hoping that the same faith which dazzled them will do the same for you, and that the same joy which filled their hearts will fill yours. Get ready to shine like stars.
