Great Is Thy Faithfulness

It was the worst day in Judah’s history.  Their capital city, Jerusalem, was destroyed, their Temple demolished, their population decimated by the armies of Babylon.  All their leaders — civic and religious — were carried away captive, leaving only a remnant of peasant farmers to occupy the land.  The Lord God had callously abandoned His city, His Temple, His people.  The Hebrew people had lost their national identity.  God’s “chosen people” had been trashed.
The prophet Jeremiah, who had seen all this coming, who had tried to warn his people, now wrote the book of Lamentations, possibly the saddest book in the whole Bible.  Yet, in the very middle of it, these hopeful words appear:

"This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.  It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.  They are new every morning:  great is thy faithfulness.  The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.  The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.  It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the  salvation of the Lord."

Out of that experience of absolute devastation came a beloved hymn:

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided -- Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.

So always remember that the Lord is never so near as when He seems most far away.

Amen

St. Paul used his to glorify God and, in so doing, found the secret of joy. decided to write a devotional commentary on his letter to the fledgling Christian community in Philippi. They too were discovering the secret of genuine joy. I am hoping that the same faith which dazzled them will do the same for you, and that the same joy which filled their hearts will fill yours.
